Baltic Cruise

The Complete Guide to Packing for Your Baltic Cruise (Free Packing List)

Are you getting ready for your upcoming Baltic cruise? Packing for a Baltic cruise is different from packing for a Mediterranean cruise because of the cooler weather in Northern Europe. Below are some tips for what to pack for your Baltic cruise, and I also have a Baltic cruise packing list that you can download for free as a PDF printable. It’s a one page checklist to make sure you don’t forget any essential items while packing for your cruise.

What to Pack for Your Baltic Cruise

Summer is a great time to go on a Baltic cruise because the weather is more comfortable. But don’t count on beach weather—it’s a bit too chilly for that. Daytime temperatures usually reach the low 70s °F, while at night, they drop to the high 50s°F. It’s not as warm as a Mediterranean cruise, so you’ll want to dress in layers for outdoor activities like city and garden tours.

Don’t forget to pack some smart outfits for dinner on the cruise ship and a wrap and sweater to stay cozy in the air-conditioned areas.

Pants and Shorts

Pack a few pairs of pants, such as jeans, khakis, and capris. You might want to pack a pair of shorts, but most of your outfits should be pants since Northern European summers can be cool.

Shirts

Don’t forget to pack a mix of shirts for different occasions and weather, like T-shirts, polo shirts, button-down shirts, or blouses.

Sweatshirts and/or Sweaters

Pack cardigans, sweatshirts or sweaters for layering. They’ll keep you warm and cozy on the air-conditioned cruise ship.

Underwear

Pack extra underwear because if you hit the indoor pool, you might end up changing a few times in a day. I always pack some extras. For example, if you’re going on a week-long Baltic cruise, make sure to pack 10 pairs of underwear.

Socks

Just like bringing spare underwear, it’s smart to bring along some extra socks, you know, just in case.

Hats or Baseball Caps

Don’t forget to bring a hat or baseball cap to protect you from the sun. You’ll likely be spending a lot of time outdoors exploring cities and going sightseeing.

Gym Clothes with Sneakers

I always seem to forget to pack my gym clothes when I go on a cruise. Then I end up wishing I had brought them. They’re great for staying active on sea days or just lounging on the ship, even if you don’t plan on working out.

Bathing Suit and Swim Goggles

It’s not going to be pool weather, but it’s still a good idea to pack your swimsuits and goggles for your Baltic cruise. You never know when you might feel like taking a dip in the indoor pool during one of the sea days.

Swim Cover Up

Don’t forget to bring a swim cover-up with your bathing suit. It comes in handy when you’re at the pool or if you want to grab a quick bite at the buffet. I like this swim cover up, it provides enough coverage and comes in many fun prints.

Flip Flops

Pack a pair of flip-flops. You will need them when you go to the indoor pool, and they also double as slippers when you are in your cabin.

Pajamas

Pack some pajamas that are cozy and comfortable.

Eveningwear

When you’re on a Baltic cruise, it’s a good idea to dress up for evening dinners like the captain’s dinner, gala night, or farewell party. The dress code is usually optional, but it’s nice to look your best.

Plus, there are usually lots of photographers on board, so it’s nice to be dressed up for those special moments. Getting a family photo during the cruise is a great way to capture memories without paying expensive photo studio fees.

Dressy shoes

Don’t forget to bring a nice pair of dressy shoes that go well with your evening dinner outfits. Make sure they’re comfortable because you’ll only be bringing one dressy pair on the cruise!

Evening Bag or Clutch Bag

Pack an evening bag or a clutch bag that will go with your evening wear. I personally like clutch bags with wrist straps so I can keep my hands free, especially when I’m at the buffet.

Shawl/Pashmina

Don’t forget to bring a shawl or pashmina for your Baltic cruise. It’s perfect for keeping warm in the chilly dining rooms when you’re dressed up and as a cozy blanket on the tour bus.

Lightweight Jacket

Don’t forget to take a light jacket with you for your Baltic cruise in case it gets chilly. I recommend bringing a packable lightweight jacket so it doesn’t take up too much space in your luggage.

Walking Shoes

You will be doing a lot of walking when you go on a Baltic cruise. Make sure to pack some comfy walking shoes for exploring cities and going on shore excursions. I recommend bringing stylish yet comfortable walking shoes. I like these men’s loafer with memory foam. For women, I recommend these slip-on walking shoes that feel like sneakers but look more stylish I like how they come in many colors.

Mesh Laundry Bag

Pack a few mesh laundry bags that can help you organize your dirty clothes.

Umbrella

Don’t forget to pack a small umbrella in your bag. It’ll come in handy when it starts raining while you’re out exploring. You need a light-weight, compact umbrella that does not take up a lot of space in your bag.

Sunglasses

Don’t forget your sunglasses! It’s a must-bring for Baltic cruises.

Prescription Glasses or Contacts

If you wear prescription glasses, don’t forget to pack them. Bring along a carrying case for your glasses. If you wear contacts, make sure to bring that too.

European Plug Adapter

Don’t forget to pack a European plug adapter for your Baltic cruise. You might not need it on the cruise ship, but you’ll definitely need it at European hotels before or after your trip. Most European countries use the Type C plug with two round pins, but some have different types. Consider bringing a universal plug adapter that can work with most outlets.

Chargers

Don’t forget to pack the chargers for your phone and other electronic devices!

External Battery Packs

Don’t forget to bring some extra battery packs to charge your devices. Make sure they can hold a charge for a long time. I like these external battery packs because they have a built-in flashlight.

Electronics (iPads, Kindles)

Don’t forget your devices to keep you and your family entertained – such as iPad, Switch, or Kindles. You will have some downtime during the cruise, especially on sea days, and you may want to use your devices. I recommend downloading movies and games at home before you board the ship to avoid using your internet data or paying for a subscription on the ship.

Travel Coffee Mug

Don’t forget to bring along a travel coffee mug that can keep your drink hot or cold for your cruise. I suggest grabbing one of those 20 oz insulated mugs with lids. It’s perfect for filling up with coffee. You can even add ice for some refreshing iced coffee. Having it around on sea days is super convenient.

Refillable water bottles

When you’re on a Baltic cruise, it’s a good idea to bring refillable water bottles. Most cruise ships won’t give you free water in your room, so you’ll end up buying bottled water. To save some money, I like to fill up my water bottles with water and ice and take them to my stateroom. I do the same thing when I go ashore.

Trust me, you’ll be glad you don’t have to keep going to the buffet every time you need water. Plus, the cups at the buffet are notoriously small, so you’ll need several cups of water! I suggest bringing insulated water bottles without straws. That way, you don’t have to deal with washing straws! When I’m out and about on the cruise ship, I like to keep my water bottle in this crossbody bag that is designed for water bottles.

Bug Spray

Bring bug spray to keep insects away. I always bring along these “bug spray” wipes so they fit in my purse.

Sunblock

Don’t forget to pack some sunblock that can protect your skin and easily fit in your bag. I usually bring at least a 50 SPF sunblock. I like to bring a sunblock stick for my face and cream for the body.

Tote Bag or Backpack

Pack a tote bag or backpack for shore excursions. It will come in handy for carrying drinks and snacks when you’re out sightseeing.

Resealable Plastic Bag (Ziploc)

Pack some resealable plastic bags or Ziploc. It will come in handy to store snacks.

Pool Chair Towel Clips

Don’t forget to bring a pool lounge chair towel clip if you’re going to swim. I always bring mine to keep the towel from slipping down the chair. I really hate lying on a chair with a towel that’s slipped off. I like these fun lounge chair towel clips. I also sometimes use these towel bands.

Lip Balm with SPF

Pack a lip balm with SPF that can moisturize your lips and prevent sunburned lips.

Lanyard

Don’t forget to pack a lanyard for your cruise card. You’ll need your cruise card for everything – getting on and off the ship, buying stuff in the gift shop, and getting into your cabin. It’s a pain to have to dig through your bag every time you need your cruise card. Make sure everyone in your group has a lanyard. Also, keep in mind that some ships, like Princess Cruise, have medallions, so you won’t need lanyards.

Crossbody Bag with zipper

When you’re on a Baltic cruise, it’s a good idea to have a crossbody bag to keep your valuables safe. Pickpocketing is pretty common in Europe, so you need to be extra careful and keep an eye out on your belongings when you’re sightseeing. A crossbody bag is better than a shoulder bag because it’s more secure and won’t slip off. It’s best to get one with a zipper to make sure your stuff stays put. Personally, I always use a slash-proof cross body bag because it’s common for thieves to slash bags to steal wallets. Here is a crossbody anti-theft bag with RFID blocking.

Walkie Talkie

If you are traveling with family or a big group, it’s nice to have a way to communicate with each other onboard. The cruise internet WiFi service is expensive. Bringing a long range walkie talkie is an easy way to stay in touch, and it can be a lot of fun for kids to use on the cruise ship.

Binoculars with strap

I always pack binoculars when I go on cruises. It’s fun to use on the balcony. Definitely get one that is compact, lightweight and with a strap. If you are cruising with kids, you may want to bring a kid binocular.

Mosquito Bite Ointment

Pack some mosquito bite ointment; it will come in handy if you get bit by mosquitoes. I’m prone to mosquito bites, so I always have it in my bag. I like these mosquito bite ointments that come in a roller , so you can easily apply them to your bug bite!

Anti-Seasick Medicine

Back in the day, cruise ships handed out anti-seasick medicine for free. But now, that is not always the case. It’s smart to pack your own seasick medicine (unless you want to pay a premium at the cruise ship gift shop!). If you’re cruising with kids, don’t forget the anti-seasick medicine for kids – they’re chewable and the dosage is just right for children.

Bottle of Wine

If you want to save some money, bring wine! Most cruise lines let you bring one unopened bottle of wine or champagne per adult when you first board the ship (only on the first day, not at port). Before you pack any wine, it’s a good idea to double-check your cruise line’s alcohol policy since it can vary.

Cash (small bills)

Bring some cash in small bills. It’s helpful for tipping. You could always get change from the guest services desk, but having your own cash will save you from waiting in long lines at Guest Services.

Travel Documents (Passport/Tickets)

Don’t forget to bring your passport, tickets, and any other form of ID you’ll need for the trip. Be sure to double-check that your passport is still valid and has at least 6 months before expiration. The cruise lines might not let you board if it’s too close to expiring!

Photocopy of Passport and Credit Cards

Pickpocketing is pretty common in Europe, so it’s a good idea to pack photocopies of your passport and credit cards just in case. If your wallet gets stolen, you can call the credit card companies to cancel the cards and report the theft.

If your passport is lost or stolen, having a photocopy will make reporting the loss at the consulate easier.

Toothbrush, Toothpaste and Comb/Hairbrush

Remember to pack your toothbrush, toothpaste, and comb/hairbrush for the cruise. They don’t provide these on the cruise ship, and you’ll have to pay a premium at the gift shop if you forget. Also, don’t forget the charger if you use an electric toothbrush!

Moisturizers and Face soap

Don’t forget to pack your moisturizer, face cream, and face soap. It’s important to stick to your daily skincare routine, even on vacation.

Shampoo/Conditioner (if you like to use your own)

The cruise ship provides shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the shower dispensers, so you don’t need to pack them. But if you’re particular about your hair, you might want to bring your own shampoo and conditioner.

Medication

Don’t forget to bring your prescription and over-the-counter medications. It’s always good to have cough/cold, allergy, and pain relief meds just in case.

If you take prescription meds, bring extra in case of emergencies. You never know when you might get stuck due to a flight cancellation or a strike, which happens a lot in some European airports, especially in France. I’ve been stranded in France many times because of strikes! Check out my article for a complete list of what to pack in your Cruise First Aid Kit (includes a free packing list).

Lysol Wipes

I always bring a small pack of Lysol wipes so I can sanitize my cabin. I like to wipe down the remote control, cabin phone, door knobs, bathroom sinks, and more!

Hand Sanitizer

Hand sanitizer is a useful item to pack for your Baltic cruise. Even though the ship has many sanitizing stations, you will need your own when you explore the sights.

Detergent

I usually end up hand-washing some clothes whenever I go on cruises, especially the long ones like Baltic cruises. It’s always good to have some detergent handy instead of using hand soap. I prefer to bring along detergent packets just in case I need to do a little sink laundry.

What to Pack in Your Baltic Cruise Carry-On Bag

Don’t forget to bring a carry-on bag for your Baltic Cruise. Your checked luggage won’t be delivered to your room right away on the first day of the cruise, so pack your first day essentials in your carry-on to have them handy. I recommend using a small roller luggage that can fit in the overhead compartment on airplanes as your carry-on bag. Here are a few things to pack in your carry-on bag.

Medication

Remember to pack your medications in your carry-on, both prescribed and over-the-counter. It’s just a precaution in case your checked bag gets lost. My son has a peanut allergy, so I always keep his EpiPen and allergy meds in the carry-on, just to be safe.

Book, Electronics and Toys

There might be some downtime on the first day. If you’re cruising with kids, make sure you’ve got some electronics and toys to keep them busy. I always bring along a book, just in case.

Lysol Wipes

I like to sanitize my cabin the moment I get in, so I always keep a pack of Lysol wipes in my carry-on bag.

Bathing Suit and Swim Goggles

It might not be warm enough for swimming, but in case you’re up for a dip in the indoor pool on the first day, make sure to have your swimsuit handy in your carry-on. I know my kids always want to hit the pool on day one, so I always pack their swimsuits. Don’t forget the swim goggles!

Toiletry Bag

I always make sure to pack my toiletry bag in my carry-on so I have my face soap handy if I want to freshen up.

Prescription Glasses and Contacts

Don’t forget to bring your prescription glasses, contacts, and reading glasses in your carry-on bag. You wouldn’t want to be without them on the first day of your cruise!
