Alaska cruises will be more expensive than Caribbean cruises. I’m not referring to the cruise fare but rather the cost of shore excursions.
When you go on an Alaska cruise, booking shore excursions is a must to fully experience the beauty of Alaska. However, these excursions are quite expensive, usually costing a few hundred dollars per person, which you need to add to the overall cruise cost.
On the other hand, when you choose a Caribbean cruise, it is generally more budget-friendly. This is because you don’t necessarily need to book costly shore excursions. You can easily take a cab to a local beach and spend the day there without much additional expense. Just a few dollars to cover the cab fare and the cost of renting a lounge chair and umbrella at the beach!
Warm vs Cold Weather Vacations
If you prefer warm weather vacations, Caribbean cruises are the better choice for you. However, if you enjoy cooler weather, an Alaska cruise might be more suitable for you.
Alaska in the summer is not tank top and shorts weather—the weather can fluctuate, so you’ll still need a light jacket and pants. On the other hand, Caribbean cruises promise warm and sunny days, perfect for poolside relaxation (unless there’s a storm).
Different Types of Sea Days
The experience on sea days between a Caribbean cruise and an Alaska cruise will be quite different. During a Caribbean cruise, on sea days, you’ll most likely be relaxing by the pool since the weather is usually sunny and warm, perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
If you go on an Alaska cruise, chances are high that it’s too chilly to swim in the pool. You might get lucky and have one day nice enough for the pool!
That means your sea days will be different. Instead of poolside activities, on an Alaska cruise, you’ll probably be indoors doing onboard activities like watching movies, participating in art auctions, or attending dance classes and trivia.
The View
One of the best things about going on an Alaska cruise is the breathtaking view. The captain will make announcements when your cruise ship sails near a glacier, allowing you to see it from your balcony or the ship’s deck. Seeing the glaciers is one of the best things about Alaska cruises- you will be in awe.
In addition, it’s common to see wildlife such as seals and sea otters while sailing on the cruise ship—maybe even whales if you’re lucky! A Caribbean cruise lacks the wildlife and stunning views that Alaska offers.
Room Service
If you enjoy having room service breakfast on your cabin balcony, then a Caribbean cruise is better for you. The warm weather in the Caribbean makes it perfect for this.
On an Alaska cruise, however, it can be too chilly to dine on your balcony at times. Of course, it’s still doable—just make sure to dress warmly!
Longer Vacations
If you’re short on time and can only go for the weekend, then a Caribbean cruise is your best bet. You can hop on a Caribbean cruise for a quick weekend getaway from Friday to Sunday (2 nights)!
Many of these short Caribbean cruises leave from Florida ports and usually include a visit to the cruise line’s private island. It’s a wonderful way to escape for the weekend.
On the other hand, the shortest Alaska cruises last for 7 nights. If you’re flying into the cruise port and need to stay at a hotel, you’ll have to plan for an extra night. You will need to take a longer vacation if you go on an Alaska cruise.
Hurricane
One good thing about going on an Alaska cruise is you don’t need to worry about hurricane season. If you’re going on a Caribbean cruise from June 1 to November 30, there’s a possibility of encountering a hurricane or storm.
When that happens, it’s not beach weather. You will end up being stuck indoors instead of lounging by the pool or beach. Plus, the sea can be choppy. The weather can easily ruin your vacation!
Relaxing Vacation
If you prefer a vacation that’s all about relaxation, then a Caribbean cruise is the better choice. On a Caribbean cruise, you can spend your days lounging by the pool or on a beautiful local beach, making it a wonderfully laid-back experience.
The cruise line also makes it stress-free for you by taking you to their private island, complete with lounge chairs and a lunch buffet. Everything is so well-organized that you won’t have to lift a finger to plan a thing.
On the other hand, an Alaska cruise vacation tends to be more active, since it involves numerous shore excursions. Many of these excursions take place outdoors and require varying levels of physical activity, often lasting for half or even full days. So, if you’re looking for an easy vacation where you get to relax and do nothing, then a Caribbean cruise is better for you.
