I took a look at the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Inspection report to find out which cruise ships are the cleanest and dirtiest. I personally have two upcoming cruises, so I was curious to know if the cruise ship I’ll be sailing on is rated clean or dirty.

The Dirtiest Cruise Ships
The CDC conducts unannounced inspections on cruise ships twice a year to prevent and control gastrointestinal illnesses by ensuring sanitation compliance. If a cruise ship scores below 85, it is considered not satisfactory and therefore dirty. Thankfully, the dirtiest cruises are not the mainstream popular cruise lines. They are smaller ships, and there are only two cruise ships that scored poorly. The two dirtiest cruise ships are Bahama Mama and Safari Endeavour.
Bahama Mama
- Cruise Line: Balearia Caribbean
- Inspection Score 69
Bahama Mama is the dirtiest cruise ship in the world with a very low score of 69. It’s a small cruise ship with a capacity of 1000 passengers with ferry routes sailing mostly in the Mediterranean.
It scored very low due to several sanitation issues, including poor gastrointestinal outbreak management, incomplete housekeeping outbreak prevention response plan, dirty kitchen, soiled cabinets and equipment, water quality monitoring issues, and substandard potable water testing.
Safari Endeavour
- Cruise Line: Un-Cruise Adventures
- Inspection Score 79
Safari Endeavour is the second dirtiest cruise ship with a subpar inspection score of 79. It is a small expedition ship with a capacity of 84 guests that sails in Alaska.
Although it is not as bad as Bahama Mama, it also scored low due to a dirty kitchen, poor storage, leaving eggs out, soiled cups and bowls, and a soiled cutting board.

The Cleanest Cruise Ships
The cleanest cruise ships are the ones that scored a perfect 100 on the inspection report. What surprised me is that Disney Cruise Line, which is always more expensive to book, only had one cruise ship with a perfect score.
Princess Cruises did not have any cruise ship that scored perfect, with Royal Princess scoring a close 99. Virgin Voyages and Seabourn cruise ships are also missing from the list. Here is the complete list of all the cruise ships that scored perfect, sorted by cruise line.
