Tips for Apple Picking

Here are important tips to help you make the most of apple picking.

Call Ahead Before Going Apple Picking

Apple picking is very weather dependent. It’s not uncommon for apple picking farms to close for the day because of rain. Make sure to call ahead before going to check to see if the farm is open for apple picking.

Plan Your Visit Based on the Apple Harvest Schedule

Most farms have 20 or more apple varieties. The apple picking season generally starts in September through October. There is generally a harvest schedule to determine when the type of apple is available for picking. If you are looking for a certain type of apple, definitely plan your apple picking visit around the Harvest schedule. Call ahead to check before going because sometimes certain apples may run out for the season or the crop is yielding low.

Dress appropriately for apple picking

Since you will be spending time outdoors, dress in layers so you are comfortable when apple picking. Also make sure you wear appropriate footwear since apple picking is outdoors and it may get muddy.

Don’t forget to stop by the Farm Market

After apple picking, don’t forget to make a stop at the farm market. Most places sell fresh baked apple cider donuts, pies and breads. You can also get apple ciders, hard ciders and even fruit wines. Do check out the farm market on your way out so you can take home a treat from your apple picking excursion!
