Massachusetts Record Snowfall

Massachusetts record breaking snowfall occurred during Winter Storm Juno. It was one of the most severe winter events in Massachusetts history, affecting the lives of millions of residents.

On January 27, 2015, Massachusetts was hit by a historic snowstorm that broke all previous records and paralyzed the state for days. The storm, named Winter Storm Juno, was part of a series of powerful nor’easters that swept across the Northeast in the winter of 2014-2015.

The storm intensified rapidly as it moved along the Atlantic coast, creating a phenomenon known as bombogenesis, which occurs when the central pressure of a storm drops by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

The storm produced blizzard conditions, strong winds, coastal flooding, and heavy snowfall across the region.

Worcester County, located in central Massachusetts, received the most snow from the storm, with a staggering 31.9 inches of snow falling in a single day.

This was the highest snowfall amount ever recorded in that area, surpassing the previous record of 31 inches set in 1978. Essex County received the most snowfall in 1978.

The storm also caused widespread power outages, school closures, and travel bans across the state. Governor Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency and urged residents to stay off the roads and remain indoors.

The National Guard was activated to assist with snow removal and rescue operations. Many residents were stranded in their homes, while others ventured out to enjoy the rare opportunity to ski, sled, and build snowmen in their neighborhoods.

The storm was one of the most severe winter events in Massachusetts history, and was followed by several more snowstorms that made the winter of 2014-2015 the snowiest on record.
