12 Worst Things About Shopping at Trader Joe’s

I love shopping at Trader Joe’s, but even my favorite grocery runs come with a few frustrations. Between the crowded parking lots, disappearing favorites, and little extras that add up at checkout, there’s plenty I wish were different.

Here are 12 of the worst things about shopping at Trader Joe’s.

1. The Parking Lot Can Be Stressful

Trader Joe's

Depending on the location and when you visit, finding a parking spot can feel like the hardest part of the trip.

You’re watching for cars backing out while making room for pedestrians and shopping carts. When the lot is tight and several drivers are waiting for a space, a quick grocery stop can turn into a frustrating errand.

Of course, not every Trader Joe’s has difficult parking. But if yours does, you might want to do what I do and skip the weekend rush. I’d rather enjoy my weekend than spend part of it circling a crowded parking lot.

2. Crowded Aisles Make It Hard to Browse

I think part of the fun of shopping at Trader Joe’s is browsing the aisles and discovering something new. That’s harder to enjoy when you constantly feel like you’re in someone’s way.

Trader Joe’s stores tend to be smaller than a typical supermarket, so when they’re crowded, you really feel it. There’s less room to maneuver your cart or step aside to let someone pass.

You stop to read a label, and another shopper is right behind you waiting. You move your cart, only to realize you’re now blocking something else.

Even choosing a frozen dinner can feel rushed when the store is crowded. It’s especially frustrating when you want to compare ingredients or decide whether something is worth trying.

I like taking my time at Trader Joe’s. If I’m going to browse, I’d much rather visit when I don’t feel pressured to keep moving.

3. Your Favorite Products Can Disappear

One of the most frustrating things about Trader Joe’s is finding something you love, then going back for more and discovering it’s gone.

Sometimes it’s seasonal, so you have to wait and hope it returns. Other times, it’s discontinued, leaving you searching for a replacement.

For my family, it’s the Trader Joe’s Braised Beef Roast. My son loves it and always asks me to buy it, but I haven’t seen it at my local store in a long time. I have a sinking feeling it’s been discontinued, but I’m not ready to accept it, so I still look for it every time I shop.

Discovering new products is part of the fun of Trader Joe’s, but I wish I could count on finding our favorites.

Getting everyone in the family to agree on a meal is an accomplishment. Once I find something they love, I want to keep buying it!

4. Seasonal Foods Make You Feel Like You Have to Buy Them Now

Seasonal foods are part of the appeal of Trader Joe’s, but they also make shopping feel urgent.

You see something you want and wonder whether you should buy extra because it might be gone the next time you visit.

For me, that temptation turns into stockpiling something I know will disappear at the end of the season. My weakness is the pepper jelly, which I usually find around Thanksgiving.

One year, I made the mistake of panic buying and ended up with more pepper jelly in my pantry than I could finish in a year. I was so determined not to let it go to waste that I packed jars to give to friends in Canada when I visited them!

It’s easy to convince yourself you’re being practical by stocking up. But there’s a point where buying enough to last becomes buying more than you’ll ever use.

5. Sticking to Your Grocery List Is Extra Hard

I can walk into Trader Joe’s knowing exactly what I need and still come out with a bag full of extras.

There’s always something new to try or a seasonal favorite that’s back. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever stuck to my list completely at Trader Joe’s. At least one or two unplanned items always find their way into my cart.

And if one of my kids comes along, sticking to the list gets even harder. Suddenly, we’re adding snacks we didn’t know we wanted until we saw them.

What started as a quick trip for a few essentials turns into bringing home an entire snack haul.

6. The Small Purchases Add Up Quickly

One reason it’s so easy to impulse buy at Trader Joe’s is that the prices make each extra purchase feel harmless.

A $2.99 bag of chips or a $3.99 frozen meal doesn’t seem like a big deal. The problem is adding several of them to your cart.

I’m much more likely to try something when the price is low. I tell myself it’s only a few dollars, and we might discover a new family favorite.

But by checkout, all those “it’s only a few dollars” purchases have added a surprising amount to my bill.

That’s the frustrating part. I can feel like I’m being budget-conscious with every item I choose and still leave spending more than I intended.

7. The Bakery Section Makes It Easy to Buy Too Much

I’ve definitely been guilty of buying more baked goods than my family of four can finish.

For me, it’s the Pumpkin Brioche Twist. My entire family loves it, so when it’s available, I’m tempted to buy extra.

But having more in the house also means I end up eating more than I planned. Then I freeze whatever we don’t finish, tell myself we’ll eat it later, and forget it’s there.

I’ve ended up throwing out Pumpkin Brioche Twist that had been sitting in my freezer for a year. So much for stocking up!

Buying extra only makes sense if we actually get around to eating it.

8. You May Still Need to Visit Another Grocery Store

Trader Joe’s is great for snacks, frozen foods, and easy meal ideas, but I can’t always finish my entire grocery list there.

If I need a particular national brand, a specific ingredient, or something outside its selection, I still need to make another stop.

I keep a Trader Joe’s list and a separate grocery store or Costco list for the other essentials we need.

That takes extra planning and time. On a busy day, it can be frustrating to finish shopping at Trader Joe’s and realize I still have another store to visit.

9. You Can’t Order Directly From Trader Joe’s Online

Sometimes I just want to order my groceries online and have them delivered, especially when I’m busy.

With Trader Joe’s, I have to make time to go to the store and shop in person.

Having to fit in another errand can be enough to make me put off the trip altogether.

10. Planning Your Shopping Trip Online Has Limits

Trader Joe’s website can give you ideas for what to buy, but it doesn’t feature every product.

That makes it harder to put together a complete shopping list before leaving home. And finding something on the website doesn’t mean it’s available at your local store.

It’s frustrating when you’re trying to plan a meal around a particular item and don’t know whether you’ll find it.

If one product is the main reason for your trip, calling the store ahead of time can help you avoid a wasted visit.

11. One Package May Not Be Enough to Feed Your Family

A frozen entrée or refrigerated meal can look like an easy dinner solution until you realize how much food is actually in the package.

With teenagers, one package may need substantial sides or a second package to make it enough for everyone.

I’ve learned to look closely at package sizes and think about how much my family will actually eat before counting something as a complete dinner.

12. Every Extra Visit Creates Another Chance to Overspend

I try to wait until my Trader Joe’s list is long enough to justify a trip. I know myself: every time I go, I end up buying extras.

I might stop in for one item, but then I spot a new snack or something seasonal and convince myself it’s worth trying. Suddenly, that quick stop has turned into a bag full of things I hadn’t planned to buy.

Make enough of those little trips, and the extras can add a surprising amount to your grocery bill.

For me, going less often is one of the easiest ways to keep spending under control. The fewer trips I make, the fewer chances I have to talk myself into buying something else.
