This is all due to the unusually warm tropical Atlantic and the incoming La Nina.
This Year’s Hurricane Season Will be Bad
This year’s hurricane season is predicted to be worse than last year’s, which was already bad. According to Colorado State University (CSU) meteorologists, the 2024 hurricane activity will be 170% more than the average season from 1991-2020. This is almost double the already intense hurricane activity of 2023.
25% Chance of a Major Hurricane in Texas
CSU meteorologists predict that Texas will face an unusually high level of hurricane activity this year. The chances of a major hurricane striking Texas in 2024 are expected to be 25%, which is a significant increase from the climatological average of 16% observed from 1880-2020. This represents a 9% increase in chances, which is quite alarming. A major hurricane is a category 3-5 intensity hurricane with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour or greater.
54% Chance of a Hurricane in Texas
According to experts, the number of hurricanes in Texas in 2024 will be above average, with a 54% chance. This percentage is significantly higher than the historical average of 36% of hurricanes in Texas.
Lots of Storms this Year
They are also predicting that there will be many named storms in Texas in 2024, with an 80% chance. This is a significant increase from the historical average of named storms, which is 61%.
