Spring has finally arrived, and it’s time to start preparing your home for the new season. To make it easier for you, we’ve put together a free checklist that you can download and use right away. It includes all the essential tasks that you need to do to get your home in shape for the new season. There’s no better time than now to get started on your spring home maintenance checklist. I’ve put together a list of things to do to help you get your home ready for Spring.
Spring Home Maintenance Checklist
1. Turn Outdoor Faucet Back On
If you have your outdoor faucet turned off for the winter, it’s a good idea to turn it on again. Once it’s on, you can connect your garden hose so it’s ready for use.
2. Clean Gutters
Now is a good time to clean your gutters. Check the downspouts to see if there are any blockages. Get it repaired if needed. It’s best to get your gutter cleaned early before the start of April rain showers!
3. Clean Dryer Vent
You should regularly clean your dryer vent to prevent it from becoming a fire hazard. The accumulation of lint can obstruct the vent, which can cause overheating and fire. If you use your dryer frequently, you should clean it every 6 to 9 months. It’s best to hire a professional to clean your dryer vent.
4. Replace HVAC Filter
It’s important to change your HVAC filter every three months to maintain healthy air quality, especially if you have allergies. This is a pretty easy task that you can do on your own without having to hire a professional.
If your HVAC filter has a high MERV rating, it’s best to change it more frequently, even as often as every 30 days. Personally, I recommend subscribing to an HVAC filter service so you have a convenient reminder to change your filter on time.
5. Reseal Driveways
If it’s been a while since you last resealed your driveway, now might be a good time to do so.
6. Inspect & Clean Chimney
Have a chimney professional come out to inspect your chimney and have it cleaned if necessary. If you have a wood stove, you should get it cleaned every year. Wood stoves produce a lot of creosote buildup, which can be a fire hazard if not removed regularly.
7. Inspect Water Damage in the Basement and Attic
Go to your basement and attic (if accessible), to check for visible water damage. Do you see water stains? Are there puddles? Or an active leak? These could be signs of water seepage, leaks in pipes, or other plumbing issues. Get these leaks repaired ASAP.
8. Inspect Siding
Inspect your siding. Check to see if there is any loose siding that needs repair or replacement. Also, if your siding looks dirty, it may be time for a power wash. If you have cedar siding and it’s been 10 years since your last paint job, then it’s time to repaint it. Repainting cedar siding will help protect it from rot and will make it last longer.

9. Clean Windows
Spring is a great time to clean your windows. For sparkling clean windows, spray your windows with a garden hose. Use Windex window cleaner to make it cleaner (it’s better than plain water).
Don’t use a power washer because it can damage the screens. You should also use this time to inspect all your window screens and repair any tears.
I’ve fixed my window screen with DIY screen repair kits. I like these screen repair kit. They work amazing, just use a hair dryer to fix your screen! Plus, it’s so much cheaper than having to replace the entire screen.
Aside from cleaning the exterior, you should also clean the inside of your windows.
10. Change Smoke Detector Batteries
Test your smoke detector. If it’s been 6 months since you last replaced the batteries, it’s time to change the batteries. Change your smoke detector every 10 years to make sure it’s working properly.
11. Inspect and Clean Outdoor Grill
Spring is a good time to get your outdoor grill ready for use. You should start by giving it a thorough inspection and cleaning. Use a wire brush to remove any accumulated buildup on the grates. Remove the grates and wash them with soap and water. Empty out the ash and old briquettes. If you have a gas grill, check that your gas tank is full.
12. Service A/C Unit
You don’t want to be stuck with a broken air conditioner. Spring is a good time to get your A/C unit serviced and inspected to ensure it’s working properly and ready for the summer heat. Also, inspect your A/C units, check for fallen twigs or branches around them, and remove them to prevent any blockages that could affect their performance.
13. Inspect Trees
Inspect the trees in your yard to see if there is any damage. Take a closer look at the branches to see if there are any signs of decay and cracks. If there are any branches that need trimming, you should do it in the Spring before all the leaves have fully emerged
14. Inspect Outdoor Security Lights
Inspect your home’s outdoor security lights. Make sure they are working properly. If there are any broken light bulbs, get them replaced.
15. Inspect Sprinkler System
It’s a good idea to have your sprinkler system checked by a professional sprinkler company to make sure it’s ready for use. Winter and snow can cause damage to the sprinkler heads, so it’s important to check for any broken or sunken sprinkler heads that might need adjusting. Also, keep an eye out for any sprinkler heads that have shifted. Any issues that are found should be repaired immediately.
16. Check for Termites
Spring is when you will see increased termite activity. One sign of termites is if you see termite piles. Walk around your house to check for termite piles. If you do find signs of termites, you need to call your exterminator as soon as possible to help control the infestation and prevent further damage to your property.
17. Inspect the Roof
Spring is a good time to inspect your roof to make sure it’s in good condition. You can do this by walking around your house and visually checking for any signs of damage, such as loose or peeling shingles and debris on the roof. If you notice anything unusual, it’s best to call a professional roofer to repair it. Check out our article 8 Signs You Need a New Roof
