How to boost your chances of getting into Private Schools

You’ve heard of the crazy private school admission process in New York City. What about applying to private schools in the New York suburbs?  Many of the schools are as selective as their New York City counterparts.  However, there is a way to boost your chances of getting into private schools.

How to Increase Your Chances of Getting into Private Schools?

You will increase your chance of getting into private schools if you apply during one of the school’s entry years.

What is a Private School Entry Year?

Private school entry years are the years when the school adds a new class to the grade level. Applying during an entry year will increase your child’s chances of getting into private schools because that will be the year when they let in more kids.

For example, at Rye Country Day School, Kindergarten is an entry year. During Kindergarten, they will admit an entire class of 15-18 new kids. That means there are 15-18 spots for Kindergarten. Meanwhile, if you apply during a non-entry year such as Grade 1, they will have zero openings. An opening will only occur in Grade 1 if someone leaves the school. Your chances of getting in during an entry year is a lot higher than if you were to apply during a non-entry year.

Why Apply to Private School During an Entry Year?

Applying to private school during an entry year will increase your chances of getting in. In addition to increasing your admission chances, starting a new school during an entry year is also an optimal time because there will be many other new kids starting at the same time. Your child will not be the only new student during the entry year.

Can I Still Get into Private School if I apply During a Non-Entry Year?

You can still get into private school if you apply during a non-entry year. The only thing is if you apply during a non-entry year, the chances of getting in are not as high. Depending on the school, some schools will have a few spots open in non-entry years while other schools will have no openings at all (ie: someone will need to leave the school for there to be an open spot).

When are the Private School Entry Years?

Typically, private school entry years are the years when students start a new division- Kindergarten, first year of middle school and first year of high school. However, the entry years of private schools will vary from school to school. You have to check with the individual school for their entry years.
